How High to Mount a TV on the Wall

The right height for every TV size – living room, bedroom and above a fireplace. With calculator and chart.

The rule of thumb: screen center at eye level

Watching is most comfortable when the center of the picture is roughly at the height of your eyes. On a typical sofa that is about 42" from the floor. Where the bottom edge ends up depends on the size of the TV: the bigger the screen, the lower it starts.

Looking up by about 15° is still comfortable over time – beyond that it strains your neck. All heights measured from the floor to the screen (without bezel). The wall mount is not always at the screen center: measure the distance from the mounting holes to the bottom edge on your TV.

Special cases

Bedroom

In bed your eyes are higher than on a sofa, so the screen center can go higher too, usually 47 to 55 inches. A mount that tilts slightly down makes watching while lying down more comfortable.

Above a fireplace

A TV above a fireplace often ends up too high. Use the calculator to check that the screen center stays below the recommended maximum. If not, a tilting or pull-down mount helps.

Above a console or soundbar

Leave about 4 to 6 inches between the console or soundbar and the bottom of the screen, so nothing blocks the picture or the remote control sensor.

Kitchen and standing

When you watch standing up, the screen center needs to be much higher, about 60 to 63 inches. A smaller TV usually works better here.

TV mounting height FAQ

How high should a TV be mounted on the wall?

The center of the screen should be at about eye level when seated, around 40 to 44 inches from the floor on a typical sofa. For a 65-inch TV the bottom edge is then at about 26 inches, for a 55-inch TV at about 29 inches.

How high should a TV be mounted in a bedroom?

Higher than in the living room, because your eyes are higher in bed: usually with the screen center at 47 to 55 inches. A mount that tilts slightly down improves the viewing angle.

Is a TV above a fireplace too high?

Often, yes. Looking up by no more than about 15° is considered comfortable. At 10 feet away, the screen center should therefore not be more than about 32 inches above your eye level.

How much space should be between a TV and a soundbar?

About 4 to 6 inches between the top of the soundbar and the bottom of the screen, so nothing blocks the picture or the remote control sensor.
